PARENT HANDBOOK

PARENT HANDBOOK

 WELCOME

We are pleased to welcome you and your child to TINKER VILLAGE PLAY BASE LEARNING CENTER. This handbook will acquaint you with the Mission Statement and philosophy of our program, policies, and procedures, and daily and general guidelines to make your transition and your child as smooth and positive as possible. Please read each section carefully. Our goal here is to work with you as we support your child's growth and development in the stages of their lives and provide the highest quality, loving care possible.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to engage children at the awe-filled stage of childhood

and provide an environment where they can immerse themselves

in the natural rhythms and wonder of the world.

Our Philosophy of Learning

We believe in the importance of the principles for creating excellence in a learning program. Our philosophy comes from Mr. Jean Piaget a psychologist and epistemologist known for his pioneering work in child development. Mr. Piaget’s theory on the adaptation of instruction to the learner's developmental level was that learning has to be consistent with the developmental level of the child. Providing learning opportunities, exploring, and experimenting on their own, allows them to discover and learn, so it promotes new understandings. Opportunities that allow children of different cognitive levels to learn and work together encourage younger children to move up to a more advanced level of understanding, thinking, and learning.

Another level of instruction is the use of tangible "hands-on experience” for children to learn. Providing the child with props and visual aids, materials to build, explore and create, games that involve math problems, problem-solving, mixing and adding of different ingredients and materials to classify and group information, presenting problems that require logical analytic thinking. Without a doubt, Piaget made a lasting contribution to the field of developmental theory. However, the relevance of his work expands beyond his immediate theory of cognitive development to affect psychology, sociology, and other fields as well. His work remains the most important source for understanding and envisioning the elaborate study of child cognitive development.

The Learning Experience

Our program concentrates on building creative and artistic senses, early literacy skills, mathematical reasoning, and scientific curiosity.  Through participating in new hands-on activities that balance between physical and academic development and exploring different constructive learning centers daily, children learn new communicative, social, and problem-solving skills in our nurturing environment.

Our Program Approach Emphasis

The Reggio Approach

The Reggio Approach to early childhood education places a special emphasis on the unique capabilities of each child. Regarded as one of the leading approaches to early childhood education, Reggio environments would often be filled with a range of natural and recycled materials. Interesting 'play spaces,' called provocations, are set up as teachers and children 'co-construct' their learning through open-ended exploration and questions. Allowing the teachers to follow the lead of the child’s interest and apply Project Based Learning (PBL) a teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects. Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.

Developing and Discovering Diversity

The Developing and Discovering Diversity Program focuses on providing an environment for children to experience new cultures and learn to appreciate diversity. Families enrolled in our program will have the opportunity to be “move-in residents” in our village home and our family tree, by bringing their traditions, culture, and lifestyle and with them different heritage or culture. Educational staff will facilitate learning through weekly activities, such as cooking or art classes, reading a book, or making a craft relating to the cultures represented in the village home.

Children will experience customs they would not otherwise be able to explore, creating an environment of respect for all people, regardless of ethnicity, religion, and ability. Beyond preparing them for new responsibilities in their own lives, children playing in these exhibits appreciate diversity as an integral part of our community. Exposure to another culture is crucially important for young children. Early experiences with different lifestyles reinforce a child’s ability to be accepting and inclusive.

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

TINKER VILLAGE will host a weekly field trip to visit the different businesses in our community.“When I Grow Up Day” will allow children to explore their future careers and get their minds thinking BIG for the future. Professionals from all over the community are joining us here at TINKER VILLAGE to share their jobs with all our little friends or we just might take a walk visit!

Our Staff

Our staff takes a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education and have received certifications, degrees, or both, and /or are currently enrolled to obtain an Early Childhood Education. They have been cleared through the Department of Justice through the live scan fingerprint process GUARDIAN. Everyone has a current T.B. reading (negative) or a chest x-ray updated annually and a CPR/First Aid certificate updated every two years.

 We are Mandated Reporters

As Professional Educators, we are mandated to report child abuse under the terms of the California Penal Code § 11166. Any employees who have knowledge of or observe the Child, in their professional capacity or within the scope of their employment, whom Provider or the employee knows or reasonably suspects has been the victim of child abuse, have a statutory duty to report the known or suspected instance of child abuse to a child protective agency. In addition, any employees who have knowledge of or who reasonably suspect that mental suffering has been inflicted upon the Child or that his or her emotional well-being is endangered in any other way must report the known or suspected instance of child abuse to a child protective agency.

Discipline

We desire to help children develop healthy emotions of love, confidence, and self-worth by teaching and building self-control and self-discipline. Children learn good behavior by:

Example: Children learn appropriate and inappropriate behavior by looking at us as examples. If we are anxious, angry, inconsistent, and domineering, our children will be distant, unconcerned, punitive, and weak. If we have self-control, confidence, loving, our children will be likewise.

Instruction: Communication and instruction are essential elements of positive discipline. Children feel secure, loved, and confident when they know there are definite boundaries and expectations. We teach specific expectations by using techniques such as defining workspaces, instructing on the use of material, and providing various choices from which children may choose.

Practice & Positive Reinforcement: The teacher can help a child learn self-discipline and self–control through positive reinforcement such as hugs, an encouraging word or a star on a chart for good helpers, or a reward at the end of the week.

Discipline is instruction or training designed to correct misbehavior. It does not involve justice, punishment, or getting even. We do not believe in TIME OUT. Remember, parents’ children are little people without experience; it is up to us parents, teachers, family, and friends to teach them right from wrong.

The arrival of Children :

It is highly recommended for a child be at daycare no later than 9:00 a.m.

Late drop-off after 9:00 a.m. WILL NOT be allowed.

Please do not drop off your child upset/crying. In the event, your child is crying and we cannot get your child to calm down after drop-off, we will have to call you to come and pick him/her up. If your child is not coming to daycare at all, please send a message before 8:00 a.m. and make them absent directly on BRIGHTWHEEL. It is not fun for a child to come to daycare eat, sleep, and then go home; they need time to play, learn and have fun with their friends.

Bringing your child at different times to daycare teaches them that there is no consistency or/and structure for him/her, and they get upset, misbehave and disrupt everyone's day. It's our responsibility to make sure the child is clean and dressed appropriately for the weather every day. Please make sure your child has proper clothing/layers as need it.

Release children

Children will be released only to people on the emergency form. Identification will be required of the persons picking up the child. Parents should advise the staff in advance thru HIMAMA if a person not listed is to pick up the child. We DO NOT release children to anyone under the age of 18.

Parents with legal and/or physical custody or to Child’s legal guardian;

Parent or guardian has authorized by prior arrangement in writing;

Police or Department of Social Services with proper authorization.

All persons dropping off/picking up Child must sign the Child in/out upon arrival and departure each day using HIMAMA.

Termination of Contract by Parent

Parents must provide two weeks’ notice in writing before withdrawing the Child from the program. If the Parent fails to provide two weeks’ written notice enrollment deposit WILL NOT be refunded.

Termination of Contract by Program

We reserve the right to terminate the child’s enrollment from the program effective upon two weeks’ notice to the Parent, for any reason we feel is necessary. The deposit and prepaid fees will not refund.

Immediate Termination

We reserve the right to terminate Child’s enrollment in the program effective immediately if any of the following conditions arise:

In the sole judgment of the administration, the Child’s behavior or the Parent’s behavior poses a significant threat to the physical or mental health or well-being of one or more of the other children in the program, the staff, or other persons on the premises of the program, and administration is unable to reasonably eliminate the threat; Any payment owed by the Parent to the program under this contract is not paid within 24 hours after such payment is due; If the Child is picked up late more than five times in any thirty days; the enrollment deposit will not be refunded.

Actions that may result in termination of enrollment.

1. Verbal notice, 2. Written notice 3. Contract termination.

Fighting

Biting

Hitting or slapping

Spitting

Constant Yelling

Foul language or constant screaming at others and will not listen to staff.

Constant screaming or crying that is disruptive to the other children or staff

Habitual disregard of your signed child care agreement or open hours.

The child refuses to listen to the staff and is disruptive to the children in care.

Special needs that are disruptive to the other children and or staff.

Your Child's Health

Every parent must cooperate fully with County, state, federal, CDC, and CCL health regulations. Regulations are designed to protect all children's well-being and guard as much as possible against avoidable absences for health reasons. When there are symptoms of illness or other indications that a child is not well enough for group activities, parents are responsible for making arrangements for the child to stay at home or have backup care. The center has no provisions for the care of children who are ill. Proper care at the beginning of an illness can often shorten its duration. Please send a message to report that the child is staying home due to illness. Please be considerate if your child shows any signs of an oncoming illness. We have the obligation to protect the children in our care from illness whenever possible. Children with the following conditions must be kept home and will be sent home if these conditions become apparent immediately while in the center:

  • Fever over 101. F

If your child becomes ill here with us, he/she will be isolated, and we will contact you immediately, so you can make arrangements to have him/her picked up as soon as possible. If we cannot contact you within 1 hour of your child becoming ill, we will contact your emergency contacts listed on your emergency form. The parent has 1 hour to pick up the child from the center from the time of contact. Exposure to communicable diseases, viruses, bacteria, rashes, and any infectious illnesses should be promptly reported so that we may be alerted to early symptoms. We will alert parents when their child has been exposed to an infectious disease, viruses, bacteria, rashes, and any contagious illnesses.

Remember, parents, if one of us gets sick, we all get sick, including you…

Re-admitting Following Illness

When a child has been absent for a simple cold, he/she may be re-admitted to daycare with administrator approval as long as all of the symptoms mentioned above are gone without any medication in the last 24 hours.

To return to daycare after a communicable disease, virus, bacterial, rashes, and any infectious illnesses/contagious disease (chickenpox, scarlet fever, etc.), 1.)the child must remain out for 48 hours under antibiotics. 2). A statement of good health must be brought from the child's doctor specifying exactly the type of illness the child was exposed to.

COVID-19 Policy

Children with symptoms of COVID-19 must remain at home for a minimum of 10 days, and 24 hours after the resolution of any fever without fever-reducing medication and the improvement in other symptoms. Symptoms of COVID-19 may include:

If your family travels outside of the state/country, we require your child to take a COVID-19 test upon returning To resume attendance at the childcare, the Child must receive a negative COVID-19 test result. Failure to abide by this COVID-19 Policy will result in immediate termination from child care. We reserve the right to amend this COVID-19 policy with written notice and without Parent consent, as state and local rules for COVID-19 are constantly in flux.

We ask that parents help us in ensuring the health of children and staff by monitoring symptoms, including daily temperature checks. During times of pandemics, we will adhere to the CENTER FOR CONTROL DISEASE recommendations, regulations, and state and county mandates.

Medication:

All prescribed medication by a doctor must be in the original container from the pharmacy to dispense it. The following provisions also apply:

Prescription Medication: Will only be administered as long as Parent has submitted a medication form (1) a signed permission form with instructions provided by a parent, and (2) a medical statement by a doctor from the Child’s doctor with a clear description of the child’s illness and specific required dosage and times to be administered.

Parents or legal guardians must sign our medication form and IMS-INCIDENTAL MEDICAL SERVICES form to have on file. A new form must be filled out every time your child brings new medicine.

Insurance Responsibility:

Should your child become injured here with us or on a field trip and required medical attention, the parent is responsible as the primary insurer for the child. Tinker Village is not responsible for any expenses and medical bills.

Immunization:

California School Immunization Law (California Health and Safety Code, Sections 120325-120375). Under these statutes, children in California must receive certain immunizations from attending public, private elementary, and secondary schools, child care centers, family day care homes, nursery schools, day nurseries, and developmental centers (pre-kindergarten facilities). Schools and pre-kindergarten facilities are required to enforce immunization requirements, maintain immunization records of all children enrolled, and submit reports.

Effective January 1, 2016:

Parents or guardians of students in any school or childcare facility, whether public or private, will no longer be allowed to submit a personal beliefs exemption to a currently-required vaccine. A written statement must accompany the physician's report recommending against immunizations only based on medical grounds.

Fire Drills/Earthquakes Preparedness:

Under California state law § 72553 - Fire and Internal Disasters. TINKER VILLAGE will have a fire and earthquake drill once a month. According to the Federal Emergency Agency, the need for an individual fire/earthquake safety program and an effective fire/earthquake response plan is based on the following assumptions.

  • A significant fire/earthquake can occur without warning and could happen when your child is at the center.
  • This event would cause widespread damage resulting from fire/ground shaking and other hazards triggered by the emergency.
  • Transportation routes, telephone communication, and other utility services would be interrupted.
  • Medical, fire, and rescue personnel would be severed strained and would not be able to respond to every center within the affected area for several hours.

Special Instructions:

Any special instructions: for medical, religious, health, or food allergies should be written and given to us when the child is enrolled in our program. It's the parent/guardian's responsibility to provide TINkER VILLAGE with a copy of any legal court documents to place in your child's file.

Confidentiality:

We have a very strict policy any Confidential Information, whether oral, written, or electronic, should be maintained in a manner that ensures its confidentiality to protect the child and family. Any information that parents discuss with us regarding the child, family member, or other matters will be held strict confidentially.

Open door Policy

We have an open-door policy. Meaning you are welcome to come in at any time of the day to pick up your child BUT take into consideration that children don't do well when parents stop by to drop off things and leave. For everyone's convenience and consideration, please make arrangements with the staff before your planned visit to avoid your child getting upset and us having to send the child home.

What to bring and what to wear?

In preschool, fashion means washable clothing! Comfortable, sturdy, play clothes. Painting, mud play, play dough, etc, are part of our activities. Whether you wash with TIDE or Gain, some colors of paint just won't wash out. To decide if your child is appropriately dressed before you leave the house, ask yourself, "Will I be upset if he/she comes home with dirt, paint, or chocolate pudding on this outfit? If the answer is yes, then please change to more appropriate clothing as we will not be responsible for any clothing article getting ruined.

  • Children must wear clothing that is easy to manage and encourages children to independent and self-help. Many toilet accidents are prevented if children can unbutton or unbuckle pants and belts without struggle.
  • All children must wear shoes that allow them to take off and put back on their own. As we have an indoor sandbox and they must be able to put their shoes on other own.
  • NO OPEN-TOE SHOES ARE ALLOWED. NO SANDALS, NO FLIPS FLOPS. NO CROCKS. We understand summertime is hot, but for the safety and protection of your child, NO OPEN TOE SHOES. Children must wear socks at all times.
  • Children wearing tights will not be allowed in the sandbox.
  • During cold days every child must have a jacket/sweater to go outside. The rule is NO jacket/sweater-NO playground. A message will be sent home to remind parents the child needs to bring a sweater—jacket every day.
  • Children wearing a dress must wear shorts underneath. Otherwise, we will have to have your child change into their extra clothing from their daily backpack.

Again clothing must be easy for your child to change on their own. We can not spend our days changing children; they must come to school ready from home. All items need to be labeled with your child's name, please.

PLEASE DON'T TAKE IT PERSONAL if your child has a different outfit at the end of the day; we do all of this thinking of your child. We are professional educators; we are here to teach your child and get them ready to be successful in school...we are not babysitters.

What to bring and leave here with us:

  • One crib-size fitted sheet to cover the mat
  • One child-size blanket that MUST fit in the child's cubby
  • An extra set of clothing to keep in an everyday bag pack just in case they have an accident, so we need socks, underwear, a t-shirt, and pants or shorts depending on the weather.
  • A pair of rain boots for the playground.
  • A pack of wipes monthly. We do community wipes which means all children share the wipes. Do not label a pack of wipes with your child's name or bring boxes as we DO NOT keep track of who's wipes are who’s.
  • Sunblock

If your child comes home with paint in their clothes…

Be Glad... Ask open-ended questions. Look at what they are achieving.  We use washable paint; we will put on your child's little smocks to paint, but sometimes you may find paint in some places you never imagine… they are developing their physical, social, cognitive, and creative skills like…

  • Problem-solving
  • Communication Skill
  • Sensory development
  • Creative Art and Sensory Play
  • Language development
  • Science and Discovery
  • Learning to express themselves
  • Water and Sand Play
  • Using their imagination
  • Increasing their Self Esteem

Trust us your child is learning while they play and have fun!
